Svidnice, Bohemia

Description

I have narrowed my research to this particular village through my great grandfather’s immigration papers and also his departure papers out of Hamburg, Germany in 1883. His name was Vaclav James Kronowetter.

Through Svidnice’s website and the help of Google translator, I sent an e-mail to the mayor of Svidnice. He said he would speak to a gentleman who maintains a local history of the village. That was two weeks ago. Have not heard anything back.

Has anybody else researched this village or the last name of Kronowetter?

Thanks!

Hello Kevin:

I think you are probably looking for the following record:

KRONOWETTER, Vaclav 30, Bohemia; Silesia, 2 April 1883

Which comes from Leo Baca’s Volume 6 for New York (Castle Garden Immigrant Processing Center). Castle Garden has a great search engine and I also found Vaclav there and a Franz Kronowetter who came through about 3 years prior:

LAST NAME FIRST NAME AGE SEX ARRIVAL DATE PLACE OF LAST RESIDENCE KRONOWETTER FRANZ 26 M 15 May 1880 U KRONOWETTER VACLAV 30 M 2 Apr 1883 U

Here’s the link, which has even more info:

http://www.castlegarden.org/search_02.php?m_ship=&po_port=&p_first_name…

Be sure to use the wildcard “*” in your searches—for example you could re-enter the ship’s name (Silesia) and the indicated date of arrival (2 Apr 1883) and then find all of the fellow passengers that came over on Vaclav’s ship (perhaps there are some other friends or family to find).

And if you’d like to read more on Castle Garden, you can find it in the back issue of Nase Rodina, which we have listed on our website here:

I hope that helps.
