How to check records in Jindrichuv Hradec and Olsany

Posted In
Description

My father was born in Jindrichuv Hradec in 1921, and his father Josef Munk died in 1923, probably in JH. I am trying to trace back through Josef, who apparently was born in Olsany. I will be visiting the area in two weeks (sudden trip!) and would like to get some research done in advance on the Josef Munk lineage. Thank you!

Olsany is part of the village of Studena. Studena and Jindrichuv Hradec both belong to the rabbinate of Jindrichuv Hradec. Unfortunately the records have large gaps. Here is a link to the book which should hold the birth record for your ancestor Josef Munk: http://www.badatelna.eu/fond/1073/zaznam/938/repro/

There are many Munks in the index, so if you do not find him, you may have some luck finding siblings and cousins. Genteam.at also has some obituaries. It is a site where you have to register but it is free: http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?apm=0&aid=ptb&datum=19230417&sei…

There are many obits for Teweles as well: http://www.genteam.at/index.php?option=com_prager_tagblatt

Hi, Dave, Can you provide any additional information? I checked the JH death record index from 1922-24 and no Munk’s were listed. Also checked the death index for Olsany from 1891-1937 and no Munk’s are listed. Checked birth index for Olsany from 1858-1891 with no Munk’s listed. Is there any chance that the name was something other than Munk in the Czech Republic? There are multiple Olsany’s are you sure it is the one by JH? Please email me and I’ll be happy to see if we can help you make the connection before you leave!
