Center for Judaic and Holocaust Studies, Youngstown State University (YSU) presents Dr. Jacob Ari Labendz speaking about “Jewish Life in Prague After the Holocaust: From Communism to Westernization”.  This online webinar is a talk for the Jewish Studies Program at Kent State University in Ohio.  Available to all via Zoom.

Some 55,000 Jews returned to or emerged from hiding in postwar Czechoslovakia, from an interwar population of over 350,000. Many chose to emigrate, lowering the number of Jews in the country maximally to 18,000 by 1950. With a focus on Prague, Dr. Labendz will help us answer a set of important and compelling questions. What happened to those Jew who remained? What challenges and opportunities did they face? How did the communist state, which existed from 1948 to 1989, structure Jewish life and treat Jewish citizens? What did the fall of communism in 1989 mean for Jewish life in Prague, one of Europe’s historic Jewish centers?
