CGSI Quarterly Program - Sept 2011
A CGSI Quarterly Program was held Saturday September 10, 2011.
The program which was held in So. St. Paul, MN included an overview of the resources available to genealogists through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly called the Mormon Church. Resources are available on-line through the FamilySearch website, at local Family History Centers, and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT.
Presenters: Janie and Mike Puckett are the Directors of the Oakdale Family History Center in Oakdale, MN and have been doing family history research for many years. They hold memberships in the New England Historical Genealogical Society, the National Genealogical Society, and the Minnesota Genealogical Society. Mike has published in the Register of The New England Historical Genealogical Society.
Family Search website
The familysearch website is the world’s largest collection of free family trees, records and resources. It provides searches in various record databases. It also has useful help guides, downloadable forms and access to free online genealogical courses.
Family History Library
The Pucketts gave a general description of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, collections and resources available, general rules, hours of operation, and their experience in researching there. It was advised that if you plan to travel to SLC, that you let them know in advance and that you request microfilm ahead of time so that it is available when you arrive. Information was also given about the resources available at the local Family History Centers.
