Cleveland Slovaks

Cleveland Slovaks

Cleveland’s Slovaks can best be characterized as survivors. Many survived ethnic persecution and poverty so they could have a chance at something better. Beginning with a small core of immigrants seeking work above ground rather then in the coal mines of neighboring states, Cleveland’s Slovak community grew through a giant chain migration.

The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today.
