Julie Sedivy: American society holds deeply ambivalent attitudes toward foreign languages. On one hand, other languages are recognized as valuable
skills in a global economy; on the other hand, they are seen as potential threats to national identity and unity. Drawing on academic research as well as my own experiences as a heritage speaker of Czech, I outline some of the joys and challenges of maintaining a connection to an ancestral language.
