Women's surnames in late 19th c. Slovakia

Was it common for women in Slovakia around the 18890s to use either their mother’s surname or their father’s? A family member seems to have emigrated using her mother’s last name but became a US citizen using an Anglicized first name and hr father’s last name.I have just started family research so your assistance is appreciated.
