How To Find More Info on the Hrusovsky Family
A person doing a little research has given me some information on my family's origin but I have not been able to verify. I've been using AI to try and find out more, and what it tells me is:
The claim that the Hrušovský family were hereditary chiefs of Hrušov, later elevated to the Hungarian Kingdom’s lower nobility (zeman), is plausible but lacks direct evidence. The surname’s connection to Hrušov, the village’s feudal history in Hont County, and the documented presence of Slavic nobles in Upper Hungary support the possibility that a Hrušovský family held local leadership roles and gained zeman status through landownership or service, potentially under the Csák family or ecclesiastical authorities. However, without primary sources like land grants or noble charters, the claim remains speculative, possibly rooted in local tradition or incomplete genealogical research. Further investigation in Slovak and Hungarian archives, particularly in Banská Bystrica, Budapest, or Esztergom, could uncover records to confirm or refute the claim.
I have no idea whom to contact or how to go about researching the Slovak and Hungarian archives mentioned. The old provable record I have is from Josephus Hrusovszky b. ABT 1834 in Mnesice, Slovakia. His father was Jan Hrusovsky but I have no information on him at all. (I do have a death and a marriage record from Josephus.)
There is quite a gap between 1834 and the 13th/14th century claimed from this person.
Can anyone give me suggestions on continuing this research?
Hello John,
The best option to possibly find any lower nobility connection, is to continue your research from yourself backwards and examine thoroughly each document and paper. You probably do your research on FamilySearch, where I could see more than one Josephus born to father Hrusovsky, one born in 1834 and one in 1833 in Mnesice. I am sure there will be more as these first names could rotate frequently in all related families (all the siblings and their children). Close to Mnesice (former Revfalu) is Hrušové (now the part of Bzince pod Javorinou). There are more places in Slovakia with the exact name Hrušov, but also Hrušovany, Hrušové and others.
Also the last name is common, please see this website for a frequency and where they were common (scroll down and click with a right clicking to English version) https://slovnik.juls.savba.sk/?w=hrusovsky&s=exact&c=i81e&cs=&d=kssj4&d=psp&d=ogs&d=sssj&d=orter&d=scs&d=sss&d=peciar&d=ssn&d=hssj&d=bernolak&d=noundb&d=orient&d=locutio&d=obce&d=priezviska&d=un&d=onom&d=pskfr&d=pskcs&d=psken#

The Hungaricana.eu website has also various good resources (click at Archives tab). If you need any more help with your research, I would recommend any of the virtual quarterly genealogy discussion sessions. They are listed on the CGSI website under News & Events (need to be a CGSI member to attend). The CGSI has also many presentations available in the Digital Library and other helpful resources on their website. For any other inquiries you can write to Education@CGSI.org. Thank you. IB
