Description
Looking for the Czech pronunciation of these two surnames: Basta and Busta. How could they be spelled to an English ear? Wondering if name spelled Busta in the old country could become Basta in the U.S. Thanks for any guidance you can provide

In both cases the “s” most likely would have been an “š” giving it the “sh” sound. Pronunciation most likely is “Bah-shta”. Similarly, Busta most likely would be pronounced “Boo-shta”. If the names were searched in the archive records during periods where the German language was used, the spellings may have been Bashta or Baschta, and Bushta or Buschta. Do you know the village of origin for either of the surnames? Searching the online archives would clear up if they potentially had been used interchangeably.
