Global Slovakia presents "Birthing the Slovak Language & Identity" (webinar)
Sunday, October 16, 2022 at 11:00am (EDT), 17:00h (Central European Time)
Where: on your computer, tablet, or smartphone (via live online webinar)
We have the pleasure and honor to introduce Professor John Palka, grandson of Milan Hodža, the only Slovak prime minister of Czechoslovakia during the so-called First Republic, 1918-1939.
Pillars of the Slovak National Awakening of the nineteenth century, both sides of John Palka's family wrote themselves into history thanks to their significant contributions to the establishment of the Slovak literary language and the coming alive of the sense of national identity.
Join Professor Palka in exploring the growth of Slovak national awareness and political strength, from the Slovak National Awakening to the Slovak National Uprising, told by a person whose own family was engaged in this growth.
About John Palka
John Palka is a retired professor of biology at the University of Washington with a specialty in neuroscience.
A two-time refugee from his Slovak homeland, in 1939 from the Nazis and in 1949 from the Communists, John has retained his love for Slovakia and his fluency in the Slovak language. Professor Palka has dedicated countless years to researching the role that his family played in the national life of Slovakia. The story is captured in his book My Slovakia, My Family: One Family’s Role in the Birth of a Nation.
We look forward to seeing you there!
