CGSI partners with member language and other instructors to offer classes in both the Czech and Slovak languages, and other topics of genealogical interest. These fee-based courses are conducted online so they are available to anyone with a computer or tablet, and a quality internet connection.

Beginner’s Czech Language & Culture I

A 10-week, 15-hour group online course. Learn to read, write, and speak in Czech!

Instructor

CGSI member Anna Cooková lived in Opava, Czech Republic from 1994-2002. She returned to the Czech Republic in 2008-2009 to interpret for the delegation from Rice Lake, Wisconsin to their Sister City, Žamberk. She has been offering Beginner & Intermediate courses for the community in Czech Language & Culture in Czech-American Communities since her return in February 2009. In 2012 she began teaching via Skype, and in 2013 she was awarded a grant to attend Methodologies of Teaching the Czech Language course in Prague by the Czech Government for Czech teachers in expatriate communities.

In 2015 Anna became a Registered Court Interpreter with the State of Illinois Courts and is involved with several Czech-American organizations including Wisconsin Czechs, Inc., Chicago Czech Center, Bohemian Lawyers´ Association of Chicago, and others. In 2017 she was selected to serve as a Sister City delegate on behalf of Two Rivers, Wisconsin to Domažlice, Czech Republic, served as President of Wisconsin Czechs, Inc., is currently 2nd Vice President of Sokol Milwaukee and Education Director for our national American Sokol. She has been teaching and translating since February 2009, and tries to visit the Czech Republic once or twice a year!

Instructor

Marta Sevcova comes from a small village in Slovakia in the Trenčín region. She was born, raised and educated in Slovakia. Marta finished her master’s degree in teaching Slovak Language, Literature and History at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica. After graduation she decided to see the world and moved to Ireland, where she taught the Slovak language in the Centre for European Schooling. She was also a teacher in the Educational Centre for Slovak children in Ireland, a Slovak weekend school in Dublin. It was this centre which opened her door to teaching Slovak as a foreign language, and she started to teach private lessons to both children and adults from 2019. On her journey she became a member of the platform Učíme (sa) slovenčinu, which gave her an opportunity to focus her profession only on teaching Slovak language as a foreign language from 2022. Since then, Marta has cooperated as an independent lecturer with multiple language schools in the USA and she continues to teach online classes to private students or groups. Currently living in Kodiak, Alaska, she returns home regularly to her family in Slovakia, especially in winter where she enjoys baking Christmas biscuits, snowboarding with her friends, and playing accordion. She has been a CGSI member since 2024.
