Description

Through my search of ancestors, I had my Grandmother Balog Hudak death record in 1918. Showing her mothers maiden name is what it might spell. My cousin feels it spells Bishop. She has that name on her tree. We looked in a Slovak dictionary for the word Bishop. It spelled Biskup. Julia Biskup married to John Balog. Now looking for a town of their marriage and birth of Anna Balog. As I continue to look, Just keep on doing this. I know territories change then Austria Hungary comes up. I will keep looking

Hello Joanne,

This page might give you ideas where these last names are common in Slovakia (former Upper Hungary) https://slovnik.juls.savba.sk/ . You can use a translation option to English, but be aware it can translate also the place names (you wouldn't find those on the map if translated).

The website shows the place name versions of 'Balog', for example the place Čierny Balog, but also the last names Balog (female version Balogová) or Balogh (female version Baloghová). To see these surnames, you need to scroll down further on the page.

Feel free to send a portion of a scanned death record, which shows the parents' names, to education@cgsi.org. Thank you. Iveta B
