KUBIK, THIUHOS, town of Scolchan
Looking for details of family group’s origin in Bohemia. Parents are Frank KUBIK and Katherine Josephine Mary THIUHOS. Children, all born Bohemia, are with their parents in New York City in 1880 U.S.Federal Census and are then in West Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts in 1890 in cigar making trade: Frank b. abt. 1865; Joseph b. abt. 1868; Ameil (Amos) b. 25 March 1870; William b. abt. 1873. In a 1937 newspaper article Amos reported to say mother was “a member of the old nobility that was abolished after the World War, while his father was a commoner” and that Amos was born “near Prague.” Another newspaper article stated town was named Scolchan. Immigration to USA in 1873. Any details on location of this town and more details on family group would be most appreciated.

I’m fairly certain that the town spelling you have for Scolchan is not correct. I don’t know if this was a phonetic spelling of the actual name or if someone couldn’t read the actual town name that may have been handwritten, or what. One possibility that comes to mind is Sedlcany, which in German is Selcan. This city is in central Bohemia (Czech Republic). This is located straight south of Prague. The letter “c” in Sedlcany has the diacritical character called a hacek (pronounced hachek) above it which makes the c have the ch sound. A hacek looks like the small letter “v”. This city of Sedlcany is about 40 kilometers or 24 + miles south of Prague. You might be able to use the Czech telephone directories as a source to determine whether the Kubik’s still live in that area. I don’t recognize that surname associated with Katherine Josephine Mary which you have spelled as Thiuhos.
