Slovaks out West, Grand Forks, British Columbia

Description

My Great Grandparents Ignatius Marcsinek (Ignes Marchinek) and Franca Domzska (Franca Domsky) immigrated in 1903 and 1907 respectively from Oravsky Biely Potok in Slovakia, Ignes landing in Halifax and Franca landing in New York. They both joined family in Grand Forks, B.C. and married in 1909. They eventually left to immigrate down into the U.S. in 1920 but left cousins and community behind in B.C.

As I am starting to research there appears to be a fairly large population of Slovaks working in the mines and railroads of the areas. There were Domsky, Marcinek and Pallek cousins present there as well. I am looking for anyone who has any information on Slovaks and what brought them there.

So much information is present about the Slovaks around Philadelphia and Chicago areas but I have not found much about the Slovaks out West.

Thank you,

Shawn Marchinek
