What is Lugice?
Posted In
Description
On the 1853 passenger list my ancestors are listed as being from the country “Lugice.” Is this a German name for Austria or Bohemia? Or possibly a clue to their ancestral village?
Google searches on “Lugice” turn up nothing, so I’m stumped.

Turns out it was Žežice.
Perhaps the “g” is actually a “z” and it is Luzice. There are a few villages/towns in the province of Bohemia with that spelling. If you can send an image of the record, or the location of it online to the CGSI mailbox, we might be able to help you interpret was the recorder “thought” they heard!
It’s also possible the cursive script actually says “Zugice.” Either way, I’m clueless.
